JOB DETAILS:
Position Title: Mechanical Artisan
Reports to: Mechanical Supervisor
Function: Maintenance
JOB PURPOSE:
Repairs and maintains, in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operations manuals and manufacturer’s specifications, machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines and equipment, using hand tools, power tools, and precision-measuring and testing instruments: Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Description Maintenance Execution
▪ Perform routine and preventative maintenance of plant equipment.
▪ Repair, lubrication and cleaning of machines and tools, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems as per the direction of the Mechanical Supervisor.
▪ Use precision measuring devices such as dial indicators, feeler gauges, height gauges, micrometers, vernier calipers to verify conformance of machine specifications.
▪ Operate workshop tools and equipment, e.g. bench grinder, drilling machine, and cutter as and when required.
▪ Operate forklift or overhead crane when required.
▪ Perform small welding and fabrication jobs.
▪ Apply mechanical craft, techniques, processes and principles and be responsible for all necessary preparations required to carry out mechanical maintenance to equipment or the area assigned to the incumbent.
▪ Coordinate with other disciplines all assigned maintenance and repair tasks and ensure that all equipment is kept in good operating condition after repairs.
▪ Apply knowledge of properties and uses of various metals such as aluminium, brass, steel, cast iron, and stainless steel as per the requirements of the maintenance task.
▪ Use proper PPE and implement the prescribed risk controls as per the job-specific risk assessment.
▪ Repair mechanical faults on company vehicles where feasible.
▪ Carry out the activities of mechanical maintenance as assigned per the planned maintenance prescripts.
▪ Give technical direction and guidance for safe troubleshooting and repair jobs.
▪ Coordinate with maintenance planner to prioritize and schedule assigned jobs.
▪ Ensure early preparation for all job requirements to be executed on a daily basis.
▪ Be responsible to maintain safety, quality and housekeeping within the site mechanical workshop and on job areas as well.
▪ Assist with outage planning activities for opportunity, interim, mini-general overhauls, and general overhauls.
▪ Maintain mechanical maintenance key performance indicators on a weekly basis.
▪ The incumbent must ensure that they attend the daily toolbox talk with the maintenance team.
▪ Support the project team by giving all the mechanical requirements and request for possible changes which will lead to safe and accessible job areas.
▪ Form part of the maintenance crew during the commissioning phase of the plant.
▪ Train colleagues and trainees to ensure their competency for the required maintenance work is achieved.
▪ Attend the section’s monthly safety meetings.
▪ Ensure that maintenance tooling and the incumbent’s own toolboxes are in good condition at all times.
▪ Ensure that measuring tools that are used on the job have a valid calibration status and/or certificates.
▪ Carry out weekly plant inspections on designated areas as per the nomination on the roster.
▪ Set up and adjust metalworking machinery.
▪ Operate machinery to produce parts or tools by turning, boring, milling, shaping, slotting, grinding or drilling metal stock or components.
▪ Fit and assemble metal parts, tools or sub-assemblies including welding and brazing parts.
▪ Cut, thread, bend and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines.
▪ Dismantle faulty tooling and assemblies and repair or replace defective parts.
▪ Check the accuracy and quality of finished parts, tools or sub-assemblies.
▪ Report to the mechanical supervisor for spare parts and consumables in the incumbent’s assigned area to ensure spares availability to meet the maintenance requirements.
▪ Assist with monitoring of stock levels of spare parts to support effective inventory control.
▪ Maintain a vehicle inspection log sheet on a daily basis.
▪ Check shift operating and maintenance logbooks regularly.
▪ Ensure that data is updated daily by the responsible personnel for log books.
▪ Ensure the daily work schedules are complete and information is captured correctly. Continuous Improvement

▪ Adhere to all relevant organisational and departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures and instructions so that work is carried out to the required standard and in a consistent manner.
