Position Overview :
The Sr. Engineer, Closures Mechanisms/Plastics is responsible for design intent assembly requirement of closure mechanisms/plastics on the manufacturing line. Be the technical lead of all product issue root cause and deviation Containment. Support product launch as the single point of engineering contact for Mechanisms/Plastics. Responsible for sustaining engineering after initial product launch. This includes design and release of new parts as required such as to improve quality or the assembly process. Working with core engineering to ensure parts meets all design and validation requirements
Key Responsibilities :
Closures Mechanisms and plastic system assembly ownership
Solve complex component/system level problems using standard problem-solving techniques to determine root cause and provide containments.
Responsible for design intent assembly requirements of closure system & enforcement on the assembly line
Data driven proactive problem solving & issue avoidance due to process deviations or critical part quality issues.
Support new product launches, execute part concession deviations for Closures Mechanisms/Plastics - components in the manufacturing plant.
Collaboration with manufacturing to ensure efficient process sequence and build quality.
Sustaining Engineering
Responsible for sustaining engineering of automotive Closures Hardware and mechanism parts and assemblies such as Side Door Window regulators and glass, Handles, Latches, Checkers, Power actuators, Charge Port mechanisms, plastic trim parts and assemblies such as Side Door Exterior Rocker Trims, Side Door functional plastic parts (glass run channels, close out panels), Hood Trims, Liftgate trims, Spoiler Systems
Work closely with other stake owners and attribute owners across the company such as Vehicle Safety, Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Durability, Manufacturing, Design Studio, etc. to prove design solutions.
Cross functionally works with Manufacturing, Design and Product Development as well as with Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Stamping and Suppliers on items such as tool buy-offs and secondary component changes.
Coordinate and communicate with interfacing suppliers.
Effectively provide direction to others and negotiate a balanced solution.
Coordinate virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities for your designs.
Travel domestically and internationally as required
Skills
Proven 3D CAD skills, in modeling, Kinematics and drawings.
Hands-on knowledge of GD&T, root cause analysis, DFMEA, PFMEA, statistical process control, and production issue resolution
Strong technical ownership, data-driven decision making, continuous improvement mindset, and manufacturing/field-quality orientation.
Ability to create testing plan and conduct / coordinate physical tests to prove out design concepts and ensure performance targets are being achieved.
Proficient in reading and interpreting GD&T. Coordinate virtual engineering and physical validation testing activities for your designs.
Determine required tolerances using GD&T.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Automotive Engineering disciplines with 5+ years of automotive experience in design and release of vehicle attributes or Master of Science degree in mechanical or automotive disciplines with 5+ years of automotive experience in design & release of vehicle attributes
Experience working with Class A surface data.
Professional certification in Six Sigma (Black Belt or Green Belt), Shainin RedX, or an equivalent problem-solving methodology.
Hands-on practical experience in prototype and production assembly, including willingness to assemble parts directly.
Experience with 3D CAD system such as CATIA or similar software.
Experience in technology, system and supplier selection.
Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial.
